MATT MARTINEZ

DJ Matt Martinez, a unique blend of Indian, Pilipino and Mexican heritage was born in Linwood California, but he called Idaho home for most of his life. Matt was surrounded by music since his early childhood. He recalls when in the fourth grade sporting the very popular feathered hair look and running a Disco out of his garage. Matt would hang purple and orange signs he made out of foil from his garage window to let his friends know about the Disco Party he was hosting. From Matt’s father playing the guitar to his sister playing the piano, Matt’s exposure to music ranged from country music to ballroom dancing. This made Matt’s music background as diverse as his life. In 1993, Matt was faced with major career changes and relocating to South Florida. Matt moved to Florida to play not music but professional football for the Miami Hooters, an Arena League Football team. Before music became his focus, Matt lived an amazing life. This period of Matt’s life included everything from traveling around the world, attending the Grammy’s, starring in 5 major motion pictures like “Any Given Sunday” directed by Oliver Stone, meeting Super Model Niki Taylor, eloping to Vegas and in 1994 became parents to twin boys, Hunter and Jake. Living in South Beach, the VIP nightlife was a weekly routine for Matt and Niki, making them both familiar faces to those in the industry. Unlike his friends that always knew what DJ was spinning where; it wasn’t until one particular night that it all came together for Matt. Legendary DJ/Producer Danny Tenaglia took Matt on what he describes to have been a 16 hour musical journey that changed his life. Matt stayed the full 16 hours while his friends slept in the car. For Matt the first time he heard DJ/Producer Danny Tenaglia was the first time he heard music and understood it. Matt was as far as one could get to what would be another major change in his life. With his new passion came his new career as DJ Matt Martinez. Now DJ Matt Martinez was eagerly seeking work as a DJ. Lucky enough to know some key people in the business, Matt was able to get a gig without having any prior experience. Matt did not dare tell admit to anyone that he owned only 13 records. The combination of his distinctive, energetic and spontaneous personality along with the determination and desire to play was what made it possible for him to pull it off. For his next booking he now owned 3 boxes of records and things were moving up. It wasn’t long before this new DJ had earned the respect of not only the industry, but anyone that heard his music. Matt continued full force and soon after landed a weekly Saturday Night residency at Crobar. The rest is history. Today Matt is part of the most requested list in the industry. His gigs have included extraordinary clubs like Space and Nikki Beach, world known festivals like Ultra, Winter Music Conference and Bang, traveled to places like Paris, Dominican Republic and Chicago to play with DJ icons such as DJ Keoki, Kid Rock, DJ George Acosta, Scumfrog, DJ AM, Superchumbo, Donald Glaude, and Crystal Method. Matt no longer sports the feathered hair, but a more mature look that was inspired by his friend, Director Oliver Stone during his movie days. From thirteen records, Matt’s record collection now includes almost all genres of music and exceeds well over 55 thousand. He still listens to his music over and over, making him extremely comfortable with the music he plays. Matt Martinez’s sound is not as defined as most other DJ’s. His unpredictable selection of music takes his dance floor from familiar territory to new cutting edge styles with ease. His music mirrors his life. Best described as the "DJ for the people” His uplifting and often childlike personality creates a brilliant and sometimes twisted experience that will keep you coming back for more. Matt dreamed of having a Warehouse like no other. A place where he could have a studio, a custom made DJ booth, over-sized furniture, and stripper dancing poles. There he would host private VIP parties and industry get-togethers. In this warehouse he and other DJ’s could spin without any rules. DJ Matt Martinez has made his dream a reality. Matt’s warehouse is where DJ’s can wear one of his humorous hats while spinning, test new music and create new sounds giving new life to what we all love, MUSIC! It’s a place where it’s “All about the music”. By enforcing a strict “invitation only” rule, Matt has managed to keep his gatherings intimate which is why his warehouse is one of the industry’s most talked about places to be. Those on Miami’s A list are always hoping to get that invitation to that weekend’s affair or to be able hold a private get together at the warehouse. Guests at the warehouse have included playboy playmates and celebrities like Puff Daddy, but more importantly have included some of the nations top DJ’s like Danny Tenaglia, Eric Morillo, Behrouz, Ivano Bellini and Desyn Masiello who have stood behind Matt’s dj booth to play a record or two and sometimes more. A common topic of conversation for the industry is “who was at Matt’s warehouse this past weekend?” In addition, Matt has become a teacher like figure to many up and coming DJ’s, and enjoys guiding them in the right direction. His days are filled with duties and meetings for his position of Executive Director of Nightclub Entertainment for Revolution, a 28,000 square foot concert hall-nightclub, formerly known as Backstreets, The Edge and Chili Pepper. Just recently Matt added a new weekly residency for “Industry Playground” @ Metropolis Downtown, a Monday Morning Afterhours. So what’s in the future for Matt Martinez? Matt will soon be starting the production part of his career, and will not be holding back by any means. Matt is ready for the new challenge and guarantees a relentless stream of exciting productions.
