Daft Punk teams up with Spike Jonze in New York to shoot "Da Funk", the first in a series of attention-grabbing videos made on the back of their HOMEWORK album by such cult producers as Jonze, Michel Gondry, Seb Janiak and RomanCoppola.

Release of Daft Punk's debut album, HOMEWORK, featuring the singles Around the World, Burning and Revolution 909 plus Da Funk. France finally latches on to techno, and the album sells 2.5 million copies worldwide. Daft Punk undertakes a long series of interviews but keep their faces conceald in photographs.

Daft Punk performs at the Mayan Theater, Los Angeles. A 60-date world tour follows. HOMEWORK is proclaimed Best Album of 1997 by many in the music press. Thomas and Guy-Manuel found their own independent house labels, in 95 Roulé (Thomas), in 97 Crydamoure (Guy-Manuel).

Daft Punk record two tracks with their underground deep-house idol, New Jersey's Romanthony, in preparation for their second album.

Stardust, a one-off line-up featuring Thomas, Benjamin Diamond and Alan Braxe, scores an international hit with Music Sounds Better With You (1.5 million copies sold).

Daft Punk meets Leiji Matsumoto, one the living gods of Japanese animation (creator of the Captain Harlock), to discuss ideas for videos for the new album.

The new Daft Punk single, a Romanthony remix of One More Time, is played for the first time at the celebrated Paris nightclub, Respect is Burning, and becomes the duo's biggest hit to date with 1.2 million copies sold.

Release of DISCOVER, whose poppier, lighter sound marks a departure from the more orthodox house sound of the first album. Album sales reach 2.9 million but the robots still do the talking at interviews.
